I wish to CORRECT GERRI deBEER who is attempting to correct my statement with regards to the Pit Bull Ban. You mentioned that I stand wrong in stating that this bill is attempting to punish pets and people BEFORE the crime has been committed. Just because 5 Pit Bulls gained fame from the media from inflicting pain on a human... ALL Pit Bulls need to be wiped out from the face of Hawaii? That's ridiculous. For some odd reason, the media enjoys to harp on this breed. When I know of a Chihuahua that ripped out a 2 year old girls eye. I know of Rottweilers mauling people. I know of American Bulldogs doing the same. But, only Pit Bulls need to be banned? ALL canines have the capability to hurt people. ALL CANINES. Why wipe out only one breed? Maybe it's because that's all you hear about inflicting hurt and pain on people because as we all know, only Pit Bulls make the news.
Now there is something that you may not know. This proposed ban has no intentions of grandfathering the Pits that exist. If this bill should pass, they want to euthanise ALL Pit Bulls. Now THAT is unconstitutional. THAT is parallel to saying, because this Japanese man pulled out a gun and shot all of his co-workers, we need to gas out ALL of the Japanese from Hawaii, because they have the same kind of blood as the one person that has committed the crime. That is unconstitutional, it is discriminatory and prejudice. Of course, I realize that I have created an extreme analogy. However, it does have its' parallels to the subject at hand.
I have spoken to numerous veterinarians and House Representatives alike, who frankly think this bill is not worth spending any tax payer's monies on. Like myself and many other kama'aina, they realize that Hawaii has laws in place taking care of canines that inflict pain and injury on a human and on other animals. There are also actions that can be taken civilly and criminally to compensate for any ill actions on the animals and owners who are found to be negligent. Colleen Hanabusa should concentrate on more pressing economic issues. Pit Bulls are definitely not a priority during a time such as this.
We need to learn to punish the one's that have committed the crime, not the one's that may possibly commit crimes. If you want to chat about why other states have passed this ban, it's because "the loud minority" (as you referred to me) was not loud in those states. I will make certain that this will not be the case in Hawaii. Geri deBeer, unlike you, I don't stop my research at what the media or the "daily news" feeds me.... I research for myself and come to an educated and unbiased conclusion. These kinds of fears which perpetuate discimination because of uneducation have no place in America.
