The real assault going on in this country is that of self proclaimed "Christians" who are trying to force everyone in the country to live according to the tenets of their religion.
If the majority were truly interested in protecting the "sanctity" of marriage they would be clamoring for a federal ban on divorce, not gay marriage.
The bible condemns divorce more than forty times while only mentioning homosexuality five or six times. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality but clearly spoke out against divorce, yet how many Christians are willing to spend their entire lives in a loveless or abusive marriage just because the bible condemns divorce?
By the way, many biblical scholars now view the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah as the sin of inhospitality, not homosexuality.
The real issue here is one of civil rights. We are all guaranteed equal protection under the U.S. constitution. Marriage automatically confers over 1000 legal rights to the married couple. They only way way for same sex couples to have access to those guaranteed rights is by allowing them to enter into a civil marriage that is recognized by law. Saying that allowing gay marriage is an effort to force religions to accept it, is ridiculous. This is not a religious issue. Any religion that does not want to allow gays to marry in their church, doesn't have to. It's just another smokescreen non-issue that gets tossed out to try and cover the fact that there is no legal reason not to offer equal rights to all Americans.
My frustration is at people who seem to think their brand of hatred is acceptable simply because they worship a given way. Maybe we should see how some of these people would feel if some of the freedoms they have voted away by someone else. On second thought, let's not. Civil rights are not negotiable.
