We as the GLBT community need to take the word marriage out of Equality and call it a Civil Union! BECAUSE WE AS GLBT FOLKS ARE USING THE WORD MARRIAGE WE ARE LOSING OUR BATTLE TO OUR MOST DESERVED RIGHTS. This is because the Religious Right is Right...we as people can have the same securities and rights as married couples but it needs to be called CIVIL UNIONS for GLBT folks! Because we as the GLBT commuity lobbied for Marriage and there was a huge push for marriage we are not getting the right…

There are in every state two categories of marriage available (to differently sexed individuals): one is religious, the other civil. A male and female may be married civilly by the 'justice of the peace' or a judge, or they may instead be married by a religious leader (Priest, Rabi, Mormon Bishop, Pastor, Minister, Pagan Leader, etc.) - or in some cases by both. In the civil ceremony they are married in the eyes of the law and have all the rights and privileges the law bestows upon such individu…

The real assault going on in this country is that of self proclaimed "Christians" who are trying to force everyone in the country to live according to the tenets of their religion.
If the majority were truly interested in protecting the "sanctity" of marriage they would be clamoring for a federal ban on divorce, not gay marriage.
The bible condemns divorce more than forty times while only mentioning homosexuality five or six times. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality but clearly spoke out ag…

There are two important things to remember about Senate Bill 79, which would prohibit owning or selling specific breeds of dog.
First, Senator Hanabusa introduced the bill “by request.” That means that a member of the public asked her to introduce the bill for consideration by the Senate. Because Hawaii state law does not allow for any kind of initiative or referendum, many lawmakers—including Senator Hanabusa—feel it is important to introduce bills when requested by constituents; it gives the…

May I ask as to what facts and statistics you have? When you indicated there are more documented Pit Bull attacks, where specifically did you get your statistics? There are other breeds that also caused fatal attacks and emotional and physical scarring so, should they be banned too? Am I to believe that only pit bulls bite? I have handled hundreds of pit bulls in the last few years, and by handling, I am bent down face to face with these creatures you consider to be vicious and the only encounte…

I wish to CORRECT GERRI deBEER who is attempting to correct my statement with regards to the Pit Bull Ban. You mentioned that I stand wrong in stating that this bill is attempting to punish pets and people BEFORE the crime has been committed. Just because 5 Pit Bulls gained fame from the media from inflicting pain on a human... ALL Pit Bulls need to be wiped out from the face of Hawaii? That's ridiculous. For some odd reason, the media enjoys to harp on this breed. When I know of a Chihuahua tha…

I've done some research on Pit Bull Bans:
Pit Bulls are already banned in: Denver CO, Miami FL, and Cincinnatic OH. PETA supports a Pit Bull ban with a Grandfather Clause allowing dogs who are already in good homes and are well cared for to live the remainder of their lives safely and peacefully.
Three states are currently trying to enact a ban on Pit Bulls: Hawaii, Montana, and Oklahoma.
Carl Friedman, Director of Animal Care and Control in San Francisco, says, quote : "San Francisco has an…

I wish to correct Dianthe Castillo's remark that Pit Bulls are being punished 'before the crime is committed'. Dianthe should keep up with the daily news which too often describes yet another vicious Pit Bull attack either on a person or on another animal. How many injuries, deaths, and trauma's must be experienced before this inherently vicious animal is banned? Please, Colleen Hanabusa, listen to your constituency who asked for a ban on Pit Bulls. Do not allow the 'loud minority' to sway you a…

This bill that was introduced by Colleen Hanabusa has frustrated dog owners around the state, such as myself. During a time when unemployment is at a high rate, people are struggling to keep their families afloat and living a comfortable life has been made extremely challenging due to the circumstances surrounding America's economy, Colleen Hanabusa wants to discuss Pit Bulls? People, we need to question this woman's thinking process and decide if she really is competent to hold such a position.…

Senate Majority Caucus News- 1/28/09
Yesterday, a measure was introduced that would make it a misdemeanor to own, possess, or sell pit bulls in the State of Hawai`i.
The measure follows on the heels of two recent pit bull attacks this year. Just yesterday, a woman was taken to the hospital for injuries she suffered from an alleged attack by two pit bulls in Kapolei. Two weeks ago, a police detective reported an attack from a 70 pound pit bull that was released by its owner during an altercatio…

Now on the Hot Seat: Senate President Colleen Hanabusa takes your questions
January 22nd, 2009 by Jeanne Mariani-Belding
The economy is at the top of the list this legislative session, as lawmakers look for ways to cope with the economic downturn, staggering unemployment, foreclosures and more. Add to the mix the need to fix our ailing healthcare system and tackling some painful cuts on the education front, and the landscape looks bleak at best. And the senator, too, has floated a plan, as toda…

Yesterday we witnessed a shining moment in American history, and a historic day for Hawai'i as well.
Barack Obama, our nation's first African-American president, is also the first President born, raised, and educated here in Hawai'i.
Throughout his long campaign, he challenged us to ask who we are, what we stand for, and what our nation can truly be.
And as he ascended to lead the greatest nation on Earth — as one chapter ended and another chapter began — our nation and the world saw that thi…

Sen. Colleen Hanabusa wrote this commentary for The Honolulu Advertiser.
Recently there has been considerable attention paid to legislators' pay, including a call from the governor for the Legislature to forgo its first pay raise of the current cycle, which took effect Jan. 1.
Whether her comment grew from not knowing recent history or a willful disregard of the true facts, Gov. Lingle did not mention a vital concern: While she received two pay raises since 2007, the le…
